Glass vs Plastic vs Aluminum: Which Packaging Material Should You Choose?

Each material has a clear sweet spot. We break down cost, weight, barrier, recyclability and best-fit product types so you can decide with confidence.

The eternal packaging question. The honest answer is that none of the three is universally 'best' — each wins in a different job.

Glass — premium and inert

Glass is chemically inert and feels luxurious, which is why it dominates perfume and high-end skincare. The trade-off is weight and breakage risk, plus higher freight cost.

Plastic (PET / PP / PE) — light and cheap

Plastic is the workhorse: lightweight, shatterproof and inexpensive at scale. PET and PETG can even approach glass clarity. Best for mass-market and e-commerce where shipping cost matters.

Aluminum — protective and sustainable

Aluminum blocks light and oxygen, is fully recyclable and feels premium without the fragility of glass. Ideal for oils and mists in personal-care formulations.

  • Choose glass for luxury, fragrance and purity-sensitive formulas.
  • Choose plastic for lightweight, low-cost, high-volume runs.
  • Choose aluminum for protection, sustainability and a metallic premium look.
